English for Academic Purposes Essay Writing 101 In-Person / Online
The essay remains the cornerstone of evaluation across the university campus. However, not all first-year students have been taught the writing process required to produce an essay at a post-secondary level. Using their knowledge of Second Language Acquisition, as well as their many years experience of personal essay writing, Nicole and Lorinda will demonstrate how they instruct international students to compose essays at the pre-undergraduate level (in EAP 101).
Nicole and Lorinda have been teaching writing to international students for over 20 years. The presentation will demonstrate the process used to teach pre-undergraduate international students the steps to write an essay, the importance of essay writing, and strategies for editing essays. The process used includes an understanding of the classic pattern and an awareness of purpose, audience and context when creating/drafting an essay. The presenters will also demonstrate the process used when teaching students how to write, and provide examples and templates for thesis statements and outlines.
This session will be hybrid and registration is required. The Zoom link for online attendees will be included in their confirmation email.
