Let's Talk Publishing Online

Fall 2022 brought the academic journal publishing crisis to the doorstep of the University of Regina, with news that the Library was going to have to cancel some of its journal package subscriptions. Luckily, that crisis was averted when funds were redirected from other areas of campus, but it left many with fundamental questions about what exactly is going on in what has become a multi-billion dollar industry. Cara Bradley (Research & Scholarship Librarian) and Christina Winter (Copyright and Scholarly Communications Librarian) invite you to join a conversation around the impact of the current scholarly communications environment on researchers, universities, and the public good. We’ll look at just how much academic journals cost, “bundling” of titles for sale to academic libraries, and the pros and cons of alternative models, among other topics. We are hoping for a rich discussion that brings multiple perspectives to the table. We are unlikely to solve the problem at this session, but it is an important conversation for our campus to have as the academic journal publishing landscape continues to evolve.

This session will be offered on Zoom on Wednesday, December 7, 2:00-3:15pm.

Pre-registration is required. The Zoom link will be included in your confirmation email.
